Written between May 2012 and January 2013, this work was commissioned by the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of its founding.
While the origins of the Internet date back to the 60s, it was only until 1983 (the year of the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foundation) that its use became popular thanks to the appearance of the first nameserver sites such as: .com, .edu and .org, among others.
WWW.ATRESBANDAS.COM Is inspired by the evolution of connectivity and network systems (modems, fiber optics, wireless and satellite) and their ability to send all kinds of data through the well known Broadband.
Structurally, the work is divided into five movements; the first four are a psycho-musical-poetical interpretation of the connection systems mentioned above, and the last a re-exposition to them.
As its title suggests, the orchestra is divided into three groups or spatially located bands as follows:
I. Introduzione to the Modem -Calm and connected
Evokes the sounds produced by the modem during the connection process such as: electrical impulses with defined heights (xylophone), white noise (rattles), microtonal fluctuations (violins) and rhythmic pulsations emulating morse code (winds).
These sounds are added gradually and organically interact with each other through the rhythmic use of odd digits: 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, leading to a massive chord tutti, which has been built up throughout the movement and will be the representation of the Broadband concept.
II. Canone Fiber Optic - Moderato to copy and paste
Its canonical texture (imitative) is suggested by the braided arrangement of the microfibers in a fiber optic cable.
In the first section, each band independently exposes and develops its own dux (Theme or motif to imitate). From the second half on, the themes raised above are taken up again, but this time juxtaposed, creating a three-dimensional texture (triple canon), in which each band re-exposes and re-develops its own dux.
III. Intermezzo Wireless - Allegro and common nonsense
Improvisation and random gestures are the basis of this movement, which seeks to create an independent and dismantling of the three bands through the abolition of metric pulse. This is done in order to simulate the role of a router (Packet router) when interconnecting networks.
In this case, each band is a separate network in which the router at the end of the movement provides interconnectivity that is reflected in the massive chord tutti (concept of Broadband), that had already been heard in the first movement.
IV. Ballata for a satellite into oblivion - Adagio and Solitary
Influenced by the stories of Julio Cortazar, this musical moment is an allusion to the lonely satellite-like behaviour that the overuse of the Internet has caused in contemporary man.
V. Finale with Broadband - Presto and made massive
The concept of Broadband refers to the system through which all kinds of data can be sent simultaneously and at a rate that increases daily.
This latest movement, takes musical ideas used in the four preceding movements, articulated through the mass chord tutti (concept of Broadband) and rhythmically organized through the use of odd digits: 3,5,7,9 and 11 at the beginning; and the digits: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 11 at the end.
